Six volumes, uniformly rebound in half brown morocco and marbled paper, top edges gilt; marbled endpapers; Girlhood I: [vi],299,[1]pp; II: [iv],336pp; III: [iv],321,[1]pp; Later Life I: [iv],288pp; II: [iv],295,[1]pp; III: [iv],422pp. "Walz" stamp to flyleaf in each volume. Pencil annotations in vols I-II of Girlhood; ink note about Kemble's death facing t.p. of vol. I. Sound and stable, lightly rubbed at edges, f.f.e.p. neatly detached in vol. I of Later Life, generally clean with slight toning: Very Good. Fanny Kemble was a popular British-American actress and bestselling memoirist. Her several journals are "rich psychological and cultural documents," with "keen insights into the enormous changes transforming" America (Mainiero American Women Writers II:446). Her best-known work is now the abolitionist Journal of A Residence on a Georgian Plantation, 1838-1839 (1863), which contains her first-hand observations on slavery during her brief marriage to a Southern plantation owner.
