Lee & Shepard, Boston, 1864. First Edition. Hardcover (Original Cloth). Very Good Condition/No Dust Jacket. BEECHER, CHARLES. Redeemer and Redeemed, An Investigation of the Atonement and of Eternal Judgment, Boston: Lee & Shepherd, 1864.Small octavo, first edition, pp. xii, 357, purple cloth boards (now badly faded) with gilt lettering to the spine, former owner's name on free front endpaper. The author, a prominent preacher and brother to Harriet Beecher Stowe and Henry Ward Beecher, says here that he grew up "in a spirit of intense religious thought and emotion." Like his more famous siblings, he was a magnet for controversy, which culminated in his trial and conviction as a heretic while he was minister to the Congregationalist Church in Georgetown, Mass. (There is a detailed account of the trial in the July 26, 1863, issue of the Boston Journal, which is available online for free.) The present volume is an explanation of the ideas that got him into trouble.
