NOT a Remainder, Book-Club, or Ex-Library. 8vo. 319pp. First published in hardcover in 1987; this is the First Edition Thus; First Printing indicated. Paperback. A sequel and companion to the author's widely acclaimed Fundamentalism and American Culture, this book uses the history of Fuller Theological Seminary — a durable evangelical institution — as a lens through which to focus an examination of the broader story of evangelicalism and fundamentalism since the 1940s. Marsden's detailed history relies heavily on primary sources, and his careful attention to the surrounding worlds of mainline denominations and stricter fundamentalism makes this book a major contribution to the study of a movement that has played an important role in shaping American culture and, in fact, goes far beyond Fuller Theological Seminary, to catch the trade winds of the broader evangelical/fundamentalist movement. And, it's anything but a puff piece. It captures wonderful behind-the-scenes stories and scandals that no one before dared tell. It's a book that will never be dated---though Fuller Seminary continues on in the twenty-first century stronger than ever.

From the rear cover

The story of the first twenty years of Fuller Seminary, recounted in Reforming Fundamentalism, tells of how these high aspirations clashed with the realities of American cultural and intellectual life and especially with the realities of American evangelicalism. Moreover, these conflicts were refracted through the institution's intriguing personalities--often with dramatic and in a sense tragic outcomes.
