About This Item

Stratford-Upon-Avon: The Shakespeare Head Press, 1914. Cloth. Very Good Indeed. 9" by 7". Not Stated. A limited edition facsimile of George Villiers' scathing satirical play on Restoration theatre, illustrated. A limited edition work, limited to five-hundred and ten copies, of which this is numbered three-hundred and forty-one. 'The Rehearsal' is a satirical play, written during the Restoration. Villiers used this play to poke fun at John Dryden, and the moralistic and ambitious theatre of the Restoration, particularly tragedies. The play was published anonymously, but it is certain that George Villiers penned it. Villiers was the second Duke of Buckingham.Illustrated with a frontispiece, and one plate.Edited by Montague Summers. In the original publisher's quarter cloth binding with paper to the boards. Externally, smart, with just a few minor marks to the boards and spine. Minor bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities. Spine label is a little discoloured. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright with a couple of light spots. The occasional pencil note to the text. Very Good Indeed
