About This Item

New York: Random House, 1962. First edition. Fine in fine jacket.. First printing of Faulkner's Pulitzer Prize-winning final novel, containing "some of the most hair-raising and bizarre horse racing in the history of fact or fiction" (jacket) - in exceptional condition. The second of Faulkner's novels to win a Pulitzer Prize, and his last work in the form. Set in the author's Yoknapatawpha County and incorporating characters from previous novels, the events and emotions of THE REIVERS are acutely observed and precisely rendered although the novel exhibits markedly less of Faulkner's characteristic stylistic complexity and experimental structure than his earlier works. This allowed for a relatively straightforward film adaptation starring Steve McQueen in 1969, notable for co-star Rupert Crosse's nomination for a Best Supporting Actor Academy Award - the first such nomination for an African American actor - and its score, by an already accomplished John Williams. An attractive copy of a significant work by one of the most acclaimed US writers of the 20th century. A beautiful copy. 8'' x 5.25''. Original gilt-lettered dark red cloth. In original unclipped ($4.95) color pictorial dust jacket. Red topstain. Yellow endpapers. 305, [1] pages. Trace shelfwear to jacket. Else bright, sharp, clean, and sound.

Synopsis

The Reivers, published in 1962, is the last novel by the American author William Faulkner. The bestselling novel was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1963. Faulkner previously won this award for his book A Fable, making him one of only three authors to be awarded it more than once. Unlike many of his earlier works, it is a straightforward narration and eschews the complicated literary techniques of his greatest works.
