Hardcover. xix, 17-252p., illustrated with b&w photographs (author Kammerer; Steinach; guinea pigs, naked-to-waist human, diagrams), second printing of the American first edition, hardbound in dark blue cloth boards with spine label in red and black on buff stock. Very good condition: label is slightly scuffed, find a price erasure on the front free endpaper, book is else entirely sound, clean and unmarked. The "Steinach-Operation" involved a half-vasectomy intended to rejuvenate virility. Dr. Kammerer was a Lamarckian biologist whose reputation would later be permanently damaged by accusations of experimental fraud. Dr. Benjamin was Steinach's student who would build on his teacher's understanding of sex hormones to pioneer transgender healthcare.

Faint offsetting to endsheets from dust jacket flaps; fine in a very lightly chipped dust jacket.. 8vo, 252pp; blue cloth with printed spine label. A polymath Austrian biologist who made a great splash in the scientific community with his work supposedly verifying Lamarck's notion of the genetic inheritance of acquired characteristics, Kammerer was undone by accusations that he had apparently faked his results to get the data he wanted. In the midst of the controversy, he committed suicide in 1926.

NO remainder marks. Includes several black and white illustrations.
