One of the rarest works on the Jesuits of Brazil and Paraguay. 1758. Amsterdam. In 12vo (167 mm x 108 mm). vi + 60 + 1 [blank]. Contemporary wrapper, front cover detached and inked “le Paraguay”, worn. A fine copy, light uniform browning and scattered foxing spots, entirely uncut, original condition. First[?] French edition; an extremely rare and fundamental work on the Jesuit missions and actions in Paraguay and Brazil, with emphasis on the conflicts with the civil power, which eventually led to the expulsion of the Jesuits from the region. Sabin –for the 1757, and first, edition- gives an uncharacteristically lengthy description “The original edition of this account of the Republic which the Jesuits established in Brazil and Paraguay, and of their conflicts with the civil power, which finally resulted in their expulsion from the Portuguese dominions. It was written by, or at the instance of the Portuguese Secretary for Foreign Affairs, the celebrated Marquis of Pombal.” In addition, the work contains several documents, such as the instructions for the government of the natives. Pombal (1699 – 1782), was Prime Minister of José I and virtually led Portugal for 25 years. Borba de Moraes, II, 724.

Joseph E. Johnston was a 19th-century American Army officer who served as a Confederate States Army general, even though he trained at West Point. However, his military acumen was wrecked and constantly criticized by Confederate President Jefferson Davis – with whom Johnston was very displeased. Following his service time as a military officer, Johnston wrote and published his own memoirs – memoirs which were mostly attacks on President Davis and other officers, as well as defending his own actions and decisions during the Civil War.
'In Tall Cotton' says of this work:
"A vigorous defense of his own actions and necessarily, therefore, a hard-hitting attack on others, particularly on President Davis against whom he records his objections to excess."
According to Nevins, this work is
"one of the earliest Confederate reminiscences; strongly partisan, anti-Davis, and defensive in tone."
