About This Item

Nicosia, 2019. Bilingual (Greek-English) edition. Three volumes in slip case. Hard cover, 20 cm, 1428+1196+844 pp., ill.: colour photos of 2,004 Byzantine and post-Byzantine icons. Net weight 4350 gr. ISBNs: 9789963732418, 9789963732425, 9789963732432.

Catalogue of 2,004 Cypriot icons restored with the assistance of grants from the A.G. Leventis Foundation. The icons are arranged by Metropolis, Bishopric, city, village / district, and church / monastery.

CONTENTS:

VOL. I. Data concerning the icons in Greek and English, detailed bibliography and indices: dated icons, iconographic subjects, cities, villages, districts and monasteries, hagiographers' names, donors and dedicators and liturgical objects.
VOLS. II & III. Full page plates in colour. The oldest icons date back to the 12th century and the most recent to 1986. During these eight centuries, a big number of icons was either lost or destroyed, but a good selection representing those saved is included in this catalogue. Various styles of artistic expression are represented in these icons, ranging from folk art to western – mainly Italian influence. In effect, these reflect all religious tendencies in Cypriot society of this period and they constitute an invaluable record of Cypriot ecclesiastical faith and art. This has been the largest ecclesiastical heritage restoration project in Cyprus and Greece.
