About This Item

NY: Modern Library. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. The complete seven volume set of Proust's classic in Modern Library hardcovers with dust jacket. Six of the books are fine or near fine, but The Captive has some dampstaining to the rear panel of the jacket and rear board of the book. Rear endpapers are adhered to each other at the bottom edge. Green color of rear board is lightened from dampstain, and the rear panel of the jacket is a little rippled. All seven jackets are price clipped, and all have a number written on the front flap in ink corresponding to their order in the series, A couple of the jackets have small chips at spines. Based on Toledano's numbering and detail on spines and dust jackets, these all appear to have been published from the late 1950's to the mid 1960's. There is no writing in or on the books, and all could be unread as the pages are all tight and bright.

Synopsis

Since the original prewar translation there has been no completely new rendering of the French original into English. This translation brings to the fore a more sharply engaged, comic and lucid Proust. IN SEARCH OF LOST TIME is one of the greatest, most entertaining reading experiences in any language. As the great story unfolds from its magical opening scenes to its devastating end, it is the Penguin Proust that makes Proust accessible to a new generation. Each volume is translated by a different, superb translator working under the general editorship of Professor Christopher Prendergast, University of Cambridge.
