'Michael Kelly (1762?-1828) was the first British tenor to be acclaimed abroad, first in Italy then in Vienna where his success led to close friendship with Mozart and where he sang in the first performance of The Marriage of Figaro, 1786. Later, in London, Kelly was for many years an important figure both at Drury Lane and at the King's Theatre in the Haymarket' [wrapper blurb].
