Medium brown cloth with gilt lettering on spine and front board, top edge gilt, other edges untrimmed. 16 tissue-covered, tipped in colour plates, including frontispiece - all present. Pastedown colour illustration on front of dust jacket. Contents: Preface; Introductory; On Religious Feeling and Religious Observances; On Old Scottish Conviviality; On the Old Scottish Domestic Servant; On Humour Proceeding from Scottish Language, Including Scottish Proverbs; On Scottish Stories of Wit and Humour; Conclusion; Appendix; Index. Book has a light cigarette odour, previous owner's bookplate on front pastedown, small bump with varying creasing/damage at fore-edge of pages 57 to 119, very small area of damage or hole at top corner of last four page leaves and rear free endpaper, some text pages and some tissue pages have very light browning in margins, moderate browning to fore-edge and bottom of text block, very small bump at bottom of spine, very light edge wear, two small shallow dents on spine, 1" bump/dent to fore-edge of rear board. Dust jacket has edge wear/creases/chips; heavy browning and small red stain on spine; light browning on flap-folds and at edges; small area of damage to edge of colour plate on front panel, waviness to front panel around pastedown picture, protected in a mylar sleeve..
