The first edition, second impression of this work. Henry Hawkins, the First Baron of Brampton was Judge of the High Court of Justice between 1876 and 1898. Hawkins was raised to the bench in 1876, and was assigned to the then exchequer division of the High Court of Justice, not as baron (an appellation which was being abolished by the Judicature Act), but with the title of Sir Henry Hawkins. His knowledge of the criminal law was extensive and intimate and he got a reputation as a hanging judge.A first edition, second impression copy. Featuring sixteen pages of publisher's advertisements to the rear of volume II.Each volume contains a frontispiece and Volume II contains two additional illustrations. Collated and complete. Containing pencil and ink signatures of previous owners to the front free-endpapers of each volume. In the publisher's original cloth bindings. Externally, smart, with some rubbing to the joints and bumping to the heads and tails of the spines and extremities. Some minor shelf wear to the boards. Previous owners' pencil and ink signatures to the front free-endpapers of each volume. Internally, hinges are tender but firm. Binding is firm throughout. Light scattered spotting to the pages.
