Some pages were uncut at the top or foreedge, and I have just cut them all. Very clean and tight, no foxing or stains. No prior owner marks. Pages (x including the half title), 365. Most entrepid travellers of this age profess to be enthralled or romantic in prose about their courage and what they have done. Not Mr. de Windt. Much on Siberia and Mongolia. Original dark blue cloth covers titled and decorated in red,white and gilt, with huskies and men dragging a sledge on front cover, musk ox on spine. This edition is one of the earlier ones having more illustrations than the later editions. The preface is dated 1906 and a Publishers note on page 8 brings attention to various expedition leaders and publishers for the use of their illustrations. Frontispiece + 21 b/w illustrations + 2 maps all as called for in list of illustrations. Shelfware, rear cover stained. Third edition.William Lempriere, traveller and medical writer, was third son of Thomas Lemprière of Jersey. He entered the army medical service when young, and by 1789 was attached to the garrison of Gibraltar. In the September of that year Sidi Mahommed, emperor of Morocco, sent a message to General O'Hara, the commandant at Gibraltar, asking that an English doctor might be sent to attend his son, Muley Absolom, who was suffering from cataract. Lemprière accepted the commission, and left Gibraltar on 14 Sept. 1789; on 28 Oct. he reached Tarudant, where he attended the prince with great success. His only rewards, however, were 'a gold watch, an indifferent horse, and a few hard dollars.'
