About This Item

Cover includes quote from King John Act v, Scene 7. The last pages are as reprinted from The Times of May 3 , 1872 and from The Daily Telegraph of May 6, 1872. Jonas Howe (1840-1913) , manufacturer and historian, was born at St. John, N.B., 1840. He was educated in St John, lived there all his life and died there on Dec. 15, 1913. He was one of the founders of the N.B. Historical Society and was from 1901 to 1903 its president; and he contributed to its transactions many historical papers. [Morgan 1912] Robert Grant Haliburton was born in Windsor, Nova Scotia. His father was Judge Haliburton who wrote the best selling Clockmaker series about the humorous adventures of the Sam Slick character. Like his father he graduated from University of King's College and was part of the local volunteer militia where he rose to the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel. He was a lawyer, called to the bar in 1853. He became famous after founding the Canada First organization that saw English Canadian society as the "heirs of Aryan northmen" and that the French Canadians were a "bar to progress."
