Contemporary calf, raised bands to spine, fleurons designs and ruled in gilt, brownish morocco lettering piece, rubbed. A remarkably fresh and clean copy, with only a few foxing spots. Variant of the first edition. Supposedly an “unauthorized printing”; the work was published in Raynal´s famous “Histoire philosophique et politique des Indes”. This edition embellished with the scarce engraved portrait of the author, bound as frontispiece. Raynal is arguably one of the most renowned and critic writers on the Spanish colonization of America. In this work, made to be a history of the American Revolution, he makes reflections on the present state and future of the region, and advising on the advantages of union, freedom and education. Although London is indicated as printing place, it is likely that the work was in fact printed in Paris. The correct chronology of this edition is somewhat complicated, some giving it as the first edition. Sabin, 68102.
