About This Item
New York, NY Ballantine Books, 1973. Paperback First Ed; First Printing, so stated. First Ed; First Printing, so stated. Very Good+ in Wraps: shows indications of very careful use: light wear to extremities, and a couple of places [top and bottom front corner tips] where the blue-tinted cover has chipped away from the white underlayment, allowing the underlayment to show through; else mild rubbing and the faintest soiling to the wrapper covers; pages have tanned a bit, due to aging; the binding shows very slight lean, while remaining perfectly secure; text clean. Remains close to 'As New'. NOT a Remainder, Book-Club, or Ex-Library. 12mo. 184pp. Mass Market Paperback. Science Fiction story about a biological time bomb that could destroy the entire planet. Autoheteromorph 233: a life-form so highly adaptive that it can feed on literally anything. Starting as a chemical, it can develop into a plant, and end up as a plant-animal. Under control, it is an infinitely useful source of high-grade protein. Given mobility such as a human host, it is infinitely dangerous.Shroud was more than 200 years old, and slated for euthanasia. He had worked on the original AHT 233 control and was the last surviving expert on the formation of the life-form. When a young woman, victim of a space-accident, was suspected of carrying the protein, Dr. Shroud was literally called back from the dead to solve the problem.
