About This Item
London: George Routledge and Sons, 1904. Leather. Very Good. 8" by 6". None. John Lothrop Motley's popular historical work. Full calf leather prize binding with gilt tooling to spine. Illustrated with an engraved portrait frontispiece of the author and black and white plates. John Lothrop Motley (April 15, 1814 - May 29, 1877) was an American historian. In about 1846 he had begun to plan a history of the Netherlands, in particular the period of the United Provinces, and he had already done a large amount of work on this subject when, finding the materials at his disposal in the United States inadequate, he went to Europe in 1851. The next five years were spent at Dresden, Brussels and the Hague in investigation of the archives, which resulted in 1856 in the publication of The Rise of the Dutch Republic, which became very popular. It speedily passed through many editions, was translated into French, and also into Dutch, German and Russian. In 1860 Motley published the first two volumes of its continuation, The United Netherlands. Full calf leather prize binding with gilt tooling to spine. There is some wear to the extremities, including some chips to the spine and some bumping of the corners. The front inner hinge is beginning to strain but is holding. The binding is tight and firm and both covers are firmly attached. The front outer hinge is cracked. Internally the book is clean and bright apart from some isolated spotting. There is a prize plate to the front paste down, and a grammar school library plate to the front marbled end paper. Very Good
