Describes "...the conflicting interests which led to the founding of the Oxford English School in 1894, and argues that the small group of men who built the Oxford School established in English studies a particular tradition of humane teaching and scholarship which deserves to be recalled...[and] was founded on the belief that the English language and literature constituted in themselves a discipline as rewarding and exacting as the Classics." 192pp. .
