About This Item

Barrigada, Guam: Pacific Research Institute, 1995. 50th Anniversary Edition . Trade Paperback. Very Good. 5 1/2" x 10. Bernbach, Graham - Drawings. 309 Pages. This book has tight stiff pages and has had little use. The First Edition of this book was published by McGraw-Hill in 1945. This 1995 50th Anniversary Edition is edited by D. Turner Givens. The 21 pages of Endnotes (282 to 309) are by Givens and is an update and explanation of some of the changes he has made to the original. In 1985 Givens visited Tweed and brought up a number of points for clarification that are included in the endnotes. In editing Givens has painstakingly kept the original intact even to the pagination or the parts Blake Clark fictionalized. Such items as the term "jap" that some will find objectionable. To avoid giving too much offense Givens has replaced "jap" with "Japanese" in the subtitle on the front cover and on the title page of the 50th Anniversary Edition. There was at least one Japanese national on Guam who helped the Americans. Tweed acknowledges her contributions and after the war he defended her against American authorities. The endnotes include a brief narrative of the remainder of George Tweed's life. The endnotes are even more interesting as they explain some of the reactions to the book after it was published in 1945. Given's interviews with Tweed around 1985 respond to many of the unanswered questions in the original narrative. This story was later made into a movie staring Jeffrey Hunter entitled No Man Is an Island. Contents: The Chase, The Haven, The Rescue, The Return, The Rest, and End Notes.
