About This Item
[Salt Lake City, UT]: [C.R. Savage], 1903. Large format. Silver gelatin photograph [17.5 cm x 12 cm] / [7" x 4.5"] on a gray decorative mount [27 cm 22 cm] / [10.5" x 8.5"] Fine. Image shows a man (Albert Bullock, Beard's brother-in-law) on top of a large rock. The image is identified In Beard's hand with pencil at the foot of the image in the margin. Warmly inscribed by Beard in pencil in the lower right corner of the mount: To G.A. Bullock with love from George and Lovenia (Albert's sister and George's wife). George Beard (1855-1945) was the "Mormon Pioneer Artist with a Camera" who took photographs of his beloved adopted home of Utah and the surrounding areas, Beard used some of these images as the basis for his landscape paintings, that he would work on during the cold months of winter in his studio in Coalville, Utah. Beard was not a commercial photographer, so his images are uncommon and are rarely offered for sale, the majority of his known images reside at the Lee Library at BYU. This image was printed and mounted by C.R. Savage of Salt Lake. This image is not in the Lee Library's collection, and is presumed unique. George Beard photographs are rare.
