About the author

Stephen Moss has worked for the Guardian as an editor and writer since 1989. He was the paper's literary editor, has written widely on sport and culture, and in 2006 edited Cricket's Age of Revolution, a history of the game since the Kerry Packer coup, for Wisden.

He won the Surrey Chess Championship in 2014, though if pressed will admit his success came in the section for players graded below 140--a level grandmasters consider to be mentally challenged and which many precocious 10-year-olds eschew, boldly preferring to play in the division above.
