Description:
London: printed for John Bell...and C. Etherington at York, 1774. 9 volumes, 12mo, each volume with an engraved title page, each play with a separately printed title page and an engraved frontispiece, portraits of Shakespeare and Garrick in volume 1, volume 9 contains a Life of Shakespeare and the poems; contemporary and almost certainly original calf-backed marbled boards, black morocco labels on spines; front cover loose on volume 1; volumes 2 and 3 length of spine with vertical crack; all joints cracked, extremities worn; yet still a compelling set, unrestored. "All the plays were paginated and printed separately for the use of playgoers ... Like that of 1747, this edition (dedicated to Garrick) was accused of being the worst ever published. To be 'damned with faint praise' sometimes proves the best aid to sales, as in this case. It scored a greater success than any previous issue, one week alone witnessing the sale of 800 sets. Doubtless the beautiful copperplates helped the output considerably"…

ROSENCRANTZ AND GUILDENSTERN ARE DEAD
by Stoppard, Tom
- Used
- first
London: Faber and Faber, 1967. First edition. Near fine in very good plus plus dust jacket.. First printing of the classic existential absurdist play, a grimly humorous exploration of two minor characters from Shakespeare's HAMLET. Though the ending of the play is no surprise to Shakespeare fans (or, indeed, anyone who manages to read the title page), ROSENCRANTZ AND GUILDENSTERN ARE DEAD takes its audience on a rather unusual route to get there. Questioning the nature of probability, reality, and existence, Tom Stoppard runs his protagonists through a darkly comic wringer as they come to terms with their impending deaths.
Originally performed at Edinburgh's Fringe Festival, ROSENCRANTZ AND GUILDENSTERN ARE DEAD has been staged on the West End and Broadway, earning eight Tony nominations and four wins. This scarce hardcover first edition in dust jacket is a particularly attractive copy. 8'' x 4.75''. Original blue cloth binding with gilt spine lettering. Original unclipped (18s) dust jacket. 96 pages. Jacket with a bit of chipping to corners and spine ends, tiny spot of toning to rear corner; a hint of sunning to spine. Binding with a touch of sunning to spine and upper front board; very slight lean. Interior clean and bright.

Presentation copy from Langston Hughes, along with inscriptions from other cast and production members (Muriel Rahn who played Cora Lewis and Jan Meyerowitz who wrote the music). The opera was first produced in the Brander Matthews Hall at Columbia University in 1950 and directed by Milton Smith. The playbill reproduces Hughes? thoughts on his libretto, "It concerns the bitter wall of color between the inhabitants of Albamar Plantation in contemporary Georgia, Colonel Thomas Norwood, his brown housekeeper, Cora Lewis, and their…
