About This Item

London: William Heinemann, 1922. Hardcover. Near Fine. First edition, trade issue. Quarto. Endpapers toned as usual, near fine without dustwrapper. Tipped onto rear endpapers are two clippings, one of Beerbohm, the other an obituary of Violet Hunt. Also tipped-in is an envelope addressed to A. J. Rakeby[?] with a Typed Letter Signed laid in from author and suffragette Violet Hunt (here signed as "Violet Hunt Hueffer") dated in 1933 and discussing a Beerbohm caricature and "Miss Rosa Corder, the lady Whistler painted, and who was the mistress of Charles Augustus Howell, whose life I am engaged in writing." She goes on to discuss a few others and looks forward to having a meeting and a talk later in the week. Violet Hunt was an interesting figure, born into the center of the Pre-Raphaelite Movement. She carried on several affairs with writers including Maugham, H.G. Wells, and especially with Ford Madox (Hueffer) Ford, and she served as the inspiration for several important characters in their novels.
