Toronto: Hodder & Stoughton, 1918. 99 pp, small 8vo (7 1/2" H) - red cloth with gold lettering on spine and front board. A collection of poems by a padre who served with the 46th and 24th Infantry Divisions of the B.E.F. during World War I. He earned the nickname "Woodbine Willie" for dispensing the practical comfort of cigarettes along with his prayers for wounded and dying soldiers in France. Includes: The Sorrow of God; Prayer Before an Attack; Christmas; A Scrap of Paper; A Mother Understands; English Land in France; His Mate; What are We Fighting for?, etc. Small greeting inscription on preliminary page, book cracked at pages 86/87 and 38/39 (pages holding firmly), very small erased pencil check mark on page 98, spine slightly twisted, darkening and foxing on top of textblock, a few tiny foxing marks on fore-edge of textblock, very light edgewear, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, damp mark at fore-edge of front board, light soiling.. First Canadian Edition. Hard Cover. Good+/No Jacket.
