An early printing of this work, identified on Jisc through number of plates and pagination. George MacDonald's tale telling of an orphaned boy experiencing hardships of poverty and injustices. A story of faith and spirituality among other themes. Featuring a coloured frontispiece and eight further full page plates in black and white by W. Parkinson. The original publisher's maroon cloth binding features a charming embossed art nouveau illustration to the front board. George MacDonald, Scottish author and Christian minister in the nineteenth century, was known as a pioneering figure in modern fantasy genre; he was mentor to Lewis Carroll. In the original publisher's full cloth binding. Externally generally smart with minor shelf wear, rubbing to the rear board, spine and boards lightly bumped to the head and tail and extremities. Internally, generally firmly bound. Light few spots to the first and last few leaves, and lightly scattered throughout. Featuring a coloured frontispiece and eight further full page black and white plates. Very Good
