ROYAL CORONATION CEREMONY ON SATIN
WILLIAM IV, King of England and Queen Adelaide. The Royal Coronation of their Most Excellent Majesties. Earl-Marshal's Office, Whitehall, September 8, 1831. [caption-title].Folio, original royal navy blue boards (extremities chipped and rounded; edges rubbed) Royal arms on both covers, pale pink end papers (little faded), printed in blue on verso of 15 leaves of white satin (lightly toned), each leaf with stitched satin border. [London:] Printed by R. G. Clarke, Cannon-Row, Westminster [1831].
William IV was reluctant at first to even have a coronation ceremony, but acquiesed. He inherited the throne late in life, age 64, the oldest person to assume the monarchy, and his coronation was held fourteen months after he ascended to the throne. William was determined that his coronation would be a far simpler affair than his brother's over-the-top, expensive enterprise. The expense was 10% of what his brother's had cost, and his decision proved popular. "The accession of William IV ushered in an era of retrenchment in royal spending, and with the memory of the extravagance of the 1821 ceremony still very fresh, the new King could only with difficulty be persuaded to have a coronation at all. The first saving was in what came to be known as the 'Penny Coronation' was 'to dispose of the usual procession and with all the Ceremonies which have heretofore taken place in Westminster Hall.'"-Hugh Roberts, Royal Thrones, 1760-1840, in Furniture History,. vol. 24 (1989), p. 70.
