(173 x 120 mm.), xix, 409; xx, 321 pp., all text within red borders, marbled endpapers, thick boards, full black leather binding with 5 raised bands, blind tied bands terminated in fleur-de-lis-like ornaments, blind ruled panel on front and back covers with fleur-de-lis in each corner, turn-ins with blind rules, all edges gilt and all edges gauffered in delicate pattern of fleur-de-lis within fine rope diamonds. Text blocks fine; spines and edges of binding rubbed and worn in some places, tiny piece of gilding (8 x 2 mm) missing on Holy Dying volume, gauffering otherwise very good. Overall a very good set. Each volume inscribed on front endpapers: Holy Living volume - Emily Sewell From her most affectionate Father on the day of her Confirmation December: 20th 1858; Holy Dying Volume: Emily Sewell. With the best Blessing of her most loving Father on the day of her Confirmation. December: 20th 1858. Jeremy Taylor (1613-1667) was a Church of England cleric known for his poetic style of writing, who was chaplain in ordinary to King Charles I. Following the Parliamentary victory over the king, Taylor was briefly imprisoned several times. After the Restoration he became Bishop of Down and Connor in Ireland. The Rule and Exercises of Holy Living was first published in 1650, The Rule and Exercises of Holy Dying in 1651.
