About This Item
This Book was written by David Shipler, a former Moscow Bureau Chief for the New York Times. The Book was written when the Soviet Union was still together in 1983. The Author found the the Russian people to be warm and interesting at the personal level, but exist in a society where there is a void in place of social conscience and an insensitivity in the face of injustice. Shipler believed that the economic conditions by the early 1980's could become an insurmountable problem for the Soviet Union to overcome.
