London: John Lane the Bodley Head, 1914. Book. Illus. by 50 Photos and a Map. Very Good. Hardcover. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Original brown cloth with very slight wear at the corners, bright gilt Chinese design on the front and bright gilt title on the spine. Preface by Sir Claude MacDonald, a long time diplomat (1896 to 1912 in China and Tokyo (as Ambassador). Mild foxing on a few pages, and some age toning to the paper. Top edge gilt. Most 1914 copies are marked first editions, but I have seen one 1913 copy. It is not so designated, but this may be a second printing, but it is scarce and uncommon in either case. The authors are greatly concerned that Russian influence in Mongolia with harm British Empire interests in China and Tibet. Recommended for its insights into Russian- Chinese - British rivalries at the end of the 19th Century, as well as the travel descriptions..
