London: Alexander-Ouseley, Limited, 1929. "Said bin Sultan/(1791-1856)/Ruler of Oman and Zanzibar/His Place in the History of/Arabia and East Africa/by/Rudolph Said-Ruete/With a Foreword by/Maj-Gen. Sir Percy Cox,/G.C.M.G.,G.C.I.E.,K.C.S.I./Alexander-Ouseley, Limited/Windsor House, Victoria St., Westminster, London, S.W.1". Pages xviii, 200. Six plates, map at rear. Original green cloth, gilt titling. FIRST EDITION. Copy from the St. Marylebone Lending Library. Please note the following condition points: has library paper label on front free paste-down endpaper, with Withdrawn stamp; front free end-paper has light marks of label having been removed. Title page has round perforated mark of the library, together with the small inked ownership stamp, and the initial letter 'B' in ink below the publisher's name. All plates have the small library ownership stamp on the reverse side. Library ownership stamp on the corner of page 101. Library ownership stamp on rear of map. Blind stamped library ownership stamp on front board, letter "B" on spine in gilt. Paper throughout is very slightly aged, as usual with this soft paper, but is generally very clean and unmarked. The binding is the original cloth; the corners are slightly knocked, with wear and abrasion of the top corners; slight abrasions on the top edges of both boards; spine has a small vertical scratch, and a severe gouge mark on the spine edge of the back board. Generally a very sound copy, possibly from the library reserve collection, as it appears to have been seldom read. The last copy of this book to appear at auction, an inscribed copy, (Dominic Winter in 2017) fetched £5400 with buyer's premium. This copy is priced for condition, and is one of few to appear on the market in recent years. Scans available on request. Please note we only ship by secure airmail for orders out of UK. Description:
Rare complete copy of Keika Hasegawa's Keika Hyakugiku (100 chrysanthemums by Keika)(The British Museum only has Volumes 1 and 2, the Smithsonian only 2 and 3.)75 colour woodblock prints (all published), including eight double-page, from this seminal book on the cultivation of chrysanthemums. Volumes 1 and 2 published in July 1893 and Volume 3 published in December 1903. Chrysanthemum cultivation came to Japan from China in the 8th century and the flower was later adopted as the Emperor's crest. (The name Keika is usually a woman's name.) Active in the final years of the 19th century, he also produced books of patterns for kimono and washi paper such as Biko Zukan (Art Book) 1894, and Kyoka Zuan (Patterns of Kyoto), 1897. Original wraps are grubby and worn, interior slightly browned and edges worn. A few prints with…
