A First UK printing published by Weidenfeld and Nicolson in 1972. The BOOK is in near FINE condition. Some mild pushing at the spine tips and a little dustiness to the upper text block. A very tight and clean copy. The WRAPPER is complete and in VERY GOOD++ or better condition. A little edge-wear, creasing and rubbing which is more pronounced at the upper spine (see images). A small 1.3 cm closed tear to the front upper cover, with a small area of supporting tape to the verso. A small 0.9 cm closed tear to the lower rear edge. The red colouring of the spine is completely unfaded. This is a very nice example of a wrapper that is notoriously prone to fading and wear. The wrapper looks very striking in the removable Brodart archival protector. The book has been Signed (without dedication) by John Berger to the title page. Publisher's black buckram, gilt lettered red spine label, the publisher's initials in gilt to both boards with the top edge crimson red. Very mild offsetting to the end papers with a barely discernible pencilled inscription having been erased to the upper front blank end paper. Clean internally. The WRAPPER is complete and is in Very Good++ or better condition. Very slight edge-wear with a slither of loss at the spine ends. The deluxe issue, of which only 90 copies were printed (plus a further twenty-five hors commerce), each numbered and signed to the limitation page by both the poet and the Royal Academy artist (this being number '75'). Full cloth lettered in gold at the spine with an Ackroyd coloured inset to the upper board. The title page is printed in black and purple. Twenty-four poems accompanied by twenty-six etchings and watercolours, including ten striking double-spread presentations, many in colour. The original ETCHING, which accompanies this deluxe edition is present and is in Fine condition. It is titled ' Overy Marshes'. This etching has been numbered ('75/90'), dated ('06') and signed by Norman Ackroyd in pencil to the lower margin. Original blue cloth, titles to spine gilt, decorations to covers gilt and silver designed by James Brockman. With the original blue cloth slipcase as issued in near Fine condition. This is number 31 from an edition of only 400 copies which were Signed by the Author and printed on Barcham Green paper. Accompanied by firstly, the loose Prospectus and secondly, a printed letter from Christie Art auctioneers with a photo of the special leather bound book referring to the prospectus. A very handsome edition of this title originally published in 1964 which has been successfully adapted for the movies starring Colin Firth and directed by Tom Ford.
