About This Item

New York: Thomas Longsworth and Co, 1820. Cloth. Good. 6" by 4". Not Stated. The third edition of the collected issues of the satirical periodical 'Salmagundi', written by Washington Irving. The third edition of this work. Complete in two volumes, bound as one. A collection of the 'Salmagundi' periodicals. 'Salmagundi' is a satirical periodical, mocking and ridiculing culture and politics in early nineteenth century New York City. It was in the November 11th issue in 1807 in which Washington Irving first used the name 'Gotham' for New York City. The periodical was written under a variety of pseudonyms, and was written by Washington Irving, William Irving, and James Kirke Paulding. With a frontispiece to each volume. In the original cloth. Externally, generally smart. Light bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities, with some loss to the head of the spine. A few light spots and marks to the boards and spine. Discolouration to the spine label. Some loss to the tail of the joints. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean with the odd spot. Good
