Description

Vancouver: Douglas & McIntyre, 1989. 174pp., 200 b/w photos, decorated eps. Cloth boards in dust-jacket. From the blurb, 'Canada's first Chinese arrived in British Columbia in 1858 from California. They came in search of gold and better fortune, escapaing the rebellions, flood and drought of their homeland. By 1863 more than 4,000 lived in BC, filling jobs shunned by whites. Between 1881 and 1885 17,000 more arrived, most to work on the transcontinental railway. They were to create, in Vancouver, Canada's largest and most dynamic community, known to its original inhabitants as Saltwater City. Now Vancouver's Chinese community totals more than 150,000 people [in the 1980s], enjoys considerable political and financial influence and has become one of Canada's most successful ethnic enclaves'..
