About This Item

Very good condition; front wrapper shows extensive foxing, repaired missing minor bottom corner piece at the front wrapper, back wrapper shows color fading to the spine; internally fine.

In 1925 on the Estonian literary scene emerged a short-lived avant-garde group of three young authors – Erni Hiir, Johannes Schütz (Juhan Sütiste) and Mihkel Jürna. The group opposed itself to the Siuru movement proclaiming hedonistic philosophy, and advokated for humanity, fraternity and peace. By that time Hiir already earned his fame as the brightest representative of futurism in Estonia, while Jürna had been published only sevaral excerpts of an expressionist drama in Ilo magazine and Schütz a few poems in Murrang. During its existence the group published two literary collections – "Sang" and "Bumerang" (both in 1925), which did not have conceptual content, only shared a basic attitude of their authors directed against the literary and social establishment of the time.

Behind seemingly simple design of the "Sang" with only several elements of avant-garde (black and red colors on the front wrapper, huge publisher logo on the half-title designed by Estonia leading avant-garde artist Ado Vabbe, layout of the letters on the title page) lies quite radical and extravagant content, experiments with artificial languages, made up style.

Extremely rare!
