Hugh Thomson. 12mo., 7.3 in. x 5 in., pp. Illustrated with tissue-guarded colored frontis plus fifteen additional colored plates, and thirty-five in-text black and white drawings. Blue-green cloth boards with elaborate gilt flock-of-sheep design and title to front and spine. All edges gilt. Rubbing to extremities; corners showing. Small tears to head and tailcap of spine. Hinge showing at front endpaper and page 272, but spine/hinge holding well. Bright and sharp boards and interior. Scenes of Clerical Life is George Eliot's first published work of fiction, a collection of three short stories, published in book form; it was the first of her works to be released under her pseudonym. The stories were first published in Blackwood's Magazine over the course of 1857, initially anonymously, before being released as a two-volume set in 1858.
