First trade edition. Dedicated to the Students of Phillips Academy, Andover, Massachusetts. 79 pp. 8vo., brown cloth, beveled boards stamped in gilt, black and white, a.e.g. Boards shelfworn, corners and spine frayed. Cloth and decoration bright. Extra set of gilt decorated endpapers is inserted after front endappers (publisher's error). Signed by Holmes and dated April 23, 1880 on recto of frontispiece. B/w illustrations. Overopened at title page, else clean and tight. BAL 8931.
