J. B. Lippincott & Co., Philadelphia: 1865., 1865 pp. xviii, 381 + Woodcut frontis of the ideal country school house. 12 mo. Original full purple cloth binding, spine sun faded. Manuscript Ownership and penciled drawings of: Mary G. Schaak, Millersville, PA, April 14th, 1865 on fly leaves. On the very day that she signed this book the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln took place. Dr. Wickersham (1825-1891) was a pioneer in teacher education. He established the first state normal school in Pennsylvania and was responsible for the development of the curriculum, which served as the model for other normal schools in the state. He was also the founder of the Pennsylvania State Teacher's Association. He later served as President Arthur's Envoy to Denmark.
