About This Item

New York: The Scribner Book Store, 1935. Large octavo in wrappers (23.75 x 15.5 cm.), 147 pages. Index. An important catalogue of four hundred thirteen antiquarian science and philosophy books from New York City's legendary Scribner Book Store (Scribners - they used both names simultaneously). "Lists all books for sale at the time and describes each book with prices. Eleven sections and index of authors. Math, physics, electricity, chemistry, biology, physiology, economics, ethics, historical philosophy, technology..." The bookmen behind the catalogue - Carter, Muir and Randall (could there ever be a more high-powered threesome in books?) - saw this catalogue as part of their effort to widen the appeal of rare science and medicine books beyond the great specialized collectors of the past. John Payne's Great Catalogues by Master Booksellers, includes this and a number of other Scribners' catalogues in its survey of bookseller's catalogues of significance. Payne sampling of statement about this catalogue place it as a forerunner to the Printing and the Mind of Man project, which was largely the work of these three. Some very light soil to the printed, royal blue wrappers, otherwise fine. Order slip and envelope laid-in. Scarce. [Payne, Great Catalogues 120].
