There are two Annie Stephens in the immediate family. This inscription is likely Annie Stephens (1870-1910) daughter of Annie Fitzgerald Stephens (1844-1934) and John Stephens (1833-1896). Her sister was Mary Isabel (Maybelle) Stephens Mitchell. Annie Stephens was an aunt to Margaret Mitchell. Annie Elizabeth Fitzgerald Stephens (1844 -1934) married John Stephens in 1863. She was a landowner, political activist, and devout Catholic. The family had 12 children including Annie Stephens and Mary Isabell (Maybelle) Stephens Mitchell. Annie Fitzgerald Stephens was the grandmother of Margaret Mitchell and Stephens Mitchell. Many consider Annie Fitzgerald Stephens the inspiration for "Scarlett O'Hara" in Gone With the Wind. She was not well liked by her family (including Margaret) and was considered a vulgar woman.
