Composed by that able and experienced sea-man Sr Henry Manwayring, Knight: and by him presented to the late Duke of Buckingham, the then Lord High Admirall of England. I have perused this book, and find it so universally necessary for all sorts of men, that I conceive it very fit to be at this time imprinted for the good of the Republicke. Septemb. 20. FIRST EDITION 1644. John Booker. Probably issued as a pamphlet as there are stab holes in the inner margins. Slim small 4to, approximately 190 x 145 mm, 7½ x 5½ inches, head- and tailpiece, pages|: [8], 1-118, [10] index, rebound in modern full calf, gilt title and date to spine, small gilt ship to upper cover, marbled endpapers, edges of margins ragged due to being untrimmed and pages vary slightly in size. Occasional small rust and ink spot, pale age browning throughout, title page dusty with tips of outer corners neatly repaired, not affecting text, 3 other lower corners neatly repaired none affecting text, otherwise a very good copy. "Manwayring, who later played such an important role in the navy of James1, began his sea-career as a pirate. However, his reputation and ability ultimately secured him a pardon and a knighthood from the king" Sotheby's catalogue off the Pirie sale, No. 534 lists a manuscript of this work for King Charles 1. See: National Maritime Museum, Piracy and Privateering, page 112, No. 357; English Maritime Books Printed Before 1801, page 176, No. 2391; Christie's, The Scott Library books of Navigation and Marine Science, page 98, No.303; Sotheby's, The Library of the Earls of Macclesfield, Part Ten, page 262, No. 3684, listing a first edition and page 227 No. 3630, listing a third edition of 1667. Hulme, Keri: The Bone People. Louisiana State University Press, A tale of New Zealand. Stated United States First Edition, 1985. 450 pages, indexed. WINNER OF THE PEGASUS PRIZE FOR LITERATURE AND THE BOOKER PRIZE. Used. Very Good/Very Good unclipped original $17.95 dust jacket. Summary: "The Bone People, first published in 1984 by Spiral, New Zealand. About this book: The Bone People is an unusual story of love. It is unusual in the telling, the subject matter, and the form of love that the story depicts. This is in no way a romance; it is filled with violence, fear, and twisted emotions. At the story's core, however, are three people who struggle very hard to figure out what love is and how to find it. Hulme won New Zealand's Pegasus Prize for Literature (1984) for The Bone People. Then the book went on to win the prestigious Booker Prize (1985).
