The Second Jungle Book [Presentation Copy]
by Kipling, Rudyard
- Used
- Hardcover
London: Macmillan, 1895. First U.K. Edition, First Printing. Hardcover. Very Near Fine/Good. A "Presentation Copy" - complete with the publishers bookmark & 19th century dust jacket - having the publishers circular "PRESENTATION COPY" blind stamp on the title page and thus reserved for a patron, special friend or colleague. Blue cloth with title and decorations stamped in gilt onto upper board and spine, 12mo (7-1/4 inches tall), all edges gilt, colored endpapers, illustrated throughout with jungle-theme line drawings. Volume with spine ends softened and a tiny bump to the foot of the lower board near spine, contemporary gift inscription in ink "Jack. .." at head of the contents page, two small ink dots near top edge of title page. Gilt is bright and text is clean, lacking the foxing commonly found. DJ is worn and soiled with tears and chipping, especially at spine ends and top edge, some splatters to upper spine panel and some small tape repairs verso. The front panel has "Jack" written in a juvenile hand multiple times in pencil and is partially erased - an interesting coincidence in that Kipling's son was John "Jack" Kipling. The bookmark has minor creases and fading to the head, else fine. An intact and robust survivor of one of Kipling's most enduring works. "There are thousands that do write; there are dozens that can write; but there is only one Rudyard Kipling." Rudyard Kipling - An Attempt at Appreciation, Monkshood, G. F. (pseud. W. J. Clarke), 1899. The 1895 Macmillan edition of The Second Jungle Book is a relative rarity when found complete in it's original 19th century dust jacket. It was the first illustrated Kipling UK dust jacket issued and is found in only a handful of institutions. Found within is the publishers bookmark with the printed date of "10.9.95" at it's foot. Macmillans own records, held in the British Library, show "12 November 1895" (Richards, A85) as the official publication date of the first UK edition of The Second Jungle Book - following by just three days the publication of The Century Co.'s first US edition. The bookmark has "Works by Rudyard Kipling" printed at it's head, and shows The Second Jungle Book as being available prior to either of the known US or UK publication dates, at a price of "6s". Cutler & Styles, in "Modern British Authors : Their First Editions" (1930) shows the London edition of "The Second Jungle Book" to be the first, rather than the US edition. The bookmark is an unusual and evocative piece of advertising ephemera, showing an early selection of works by Rudyard Kipling, the winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1907. Ref. Richards, A85; Cutler & Styles p. 81.

London: printed for J. Johnson, No. 72, St. Paul's Church-Yard, 1791. Second Edition. Vellum. Fine. No half-title, as issued. According to Easson & Essick, there are two states of the plates, but only a few copies have the first state; some are a mixture. A superb copy, newly rebound by Fitterer in full vellum with salmon pink morocco lettering piece gilt. Light offsetting from plates, very minor foxing, else clean and bright in a very pretty pristine binding. Bentley 421A. Bibliotheca Bibliographici 596. Windle A3b.
