Philadelphia: T. K. & P. G. Collins, 1840. First US Edition. Hardcover. Good-. 12mo. Pp. 300. Beige half cloth, titles printed on paper label mounted to the spine. Ex-Seattle Public Library reference work with ink stamps and labels affixed to the front pastedown, ink stamps at the foot of p. 1 and bottom edge, including their deaccession stamp. Hand-written owner label mounted to the front board "Fred H. Whitworth Olympia W.T. 1866," also signed "J. M. Whitworth" in pencil on the ffep, covers rubbed and stained, spine darkened and label chipped, foxing heavy to endpapers but moderate to leaves. The Royal Navy officer and novelist's second serving of opinionated commentary on American and Canadian society and amenities, following his 1837-38 tour. Frederick and John Whitworth were sons of George F. and Mary Whitworth who arrived in Olympia, Washington Territory via the Oregon Trail in 1854 and founded several Presbyterian Churches and schools in the Puget Sound area, one of which became Whitworth University.

Otherwise clean, tight and unmarked. Very neat with bright text -- a sound and handsome set. [vol. I]242+228[vol. II]ii,300pp. Marryat's strident impressions of his tour in Canada and the US were not very well received..
