London: Cassell and Co. Ltd., 1950-1954. [Military history] SIR HAROLD ATCHERLEY'S SET. Volume one a third edition, the remaining volumes all first editions. Complete in six volumes. Octavo (22 x 15 x 27cm), pp.xv; 640; pp.xvii; 684; pp.x; 818; pp.xviii; 917; pp.xviii; 673; pp.xviii; 716. With numerous maps and plans, some folding. Publisher's black cloth lettered in gilt to spine; top edges pink, with grey monogrammed endpapers. Each volume with the typographic grey dust-jackets matching the endpapers, priced between 25 and 30s. Sir Harold Atcherley's set with his ownership signature/bookplate or inscriptions to four volumes, ownership of Anita Atcherley to one volume. Light general handling, some toning and spotting, coloured top edge sunned. Very good. Sir Harold Winter Atcherley (1918-2017) was a military advisor, public figure and senior executive at Royal Dutch Shell. He served in infantry and intelligence during the war, and was a Japanese Prisoner of War following the Fall of Singapore in 1942. Until the end of hostilities in 1945, he was sent to work on the Burma-Siam Railway, also known as the "Death Railway", being one of only 182 survivors from his contingent of 1600 prisoners at the Sonkurai Camp.
