Ste-Lucie-des-Laurentides, Quebec: L'aRPENT PERDU, 1984. 353 pp, 10 3/4" H. B&w photographs, reproductions. "(A) profusely illustrated slice of history giving a first-hand account of Lucy Griffith Pare's 96 years. Beginning in Australia, the story follows the fortunes of the author and her family from the relative comfort of Melbourne to the harsh conditions of the Western Australian Goldfields. As a child of seven in 1895 the author travels by camel train along with her sisters and mother to join her father in the thick of the goldrush. The story traces the growth of a desert camp of tents to the twin cities of Coolgardie and Kalgoorlie. Then, just before the First (World) War, the author meets and marries Alphonse Pare, a French Canadian mining engineer, and moves into a new life in Canada. The story continues in Montreal and recounts the growth of their family through the turbulent years of the two wars and the Depression. In the First (World) War Alphonse serves in the cavalry and Lucy awaits him in the British Isles; in the Second (World) War, they are represented by four sons and three sons-in-law in uniform. After the Second (World) War, the author finds herself in the centre of a burgeoning Canadian family that spans four generations and includes nine children, forty-six grandchildren and an ever-increasing number of great-grandchildren." Interior - small hand-written notation in margin of page 135 in black ink and also in red ink in top margin of page 195, small stain at top of pages 132 and 133 - migrates lightly through page. Exterior - small stain on top of text block, small crease at fore-edge of front cover, very light edge wear, two light stains at bottom edge of front cover, two tiny scuffs on front cover, light creases and some wrinkles on spine, a very small stain on fore-edge of text block..
