Inscribed by Thomson on the front endpaper: "For very dear Louise, loving thoughts always, Virgil, 19 May '88, NYC" The recipient was Louise Crane, the socialite whose Fifth Avenue apartment was the site of one of the last true literary salons in New York, and where Thomson was a frequent guest.
