About This Item

Unknown: Self published, 1963. First Edition. Paperback. Good. Signed by Author. A chrestomathy of offprints from various journals, inscribed by Quine to fellow philosopher John R. Wallace. The inscription reads: "For John Wallace [phrase in Attic Greek] with best regards, Van Quine". Wallace, most recently a faculty expert at the University of Minnesota, was an assistant professor in the famous 1960s philosophy department at Princeton, which also included Stuart Hampshire, Richard Rorty, Walter Kaufmann, Thomas Kuhn, and several other luminaries in their field. Compiled are eleven papers authored by Quine (A logistical approach to the ontological problem; On Carnap's views on ontology; On mental entities; Mr. Strawson on logical theory; Three grades of modal involvement; Carnap and logical truth; Quantifiers and propositional attitudes; The scope and language of science; The philosophical bearing of modern logic; Posits and reality; On simple theories of a complex world;) and an appendix by Rudolf Carnap (W.V. Quine on logical truth). N.d. [~1963], likely self-published. [1, t.o.c], [132], [1, blank leaf], no cohesive pagination; 25.3cm x 17.8cm; staple-bound in light blue card-stock wraps. Good- condition. Wraps are edge-worn and age-toned, with a small cup-ring stain on the front; binding is sturdy, however there are tears at the head and foot of the crease (1cm and 8cm respectively); occasional marginalia but text remains clean. Worldcat locates only six copies of this compilation in institutions, and we have found only one other copy in the trade. Ships from Dinkytown in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Due to the size/weight of this book extra charges may apply for international shipping.
