About This Item
London: J M Dent and Company, 1893 A very good copy of J M Dent's illustrated edition of Sense and Sensibility (1st published in this form in 1892; this is the 3rd printing from January 1893). It is complete in 2 volumes and was issued originally as part of a 10 volume set, edited by Brimley Johnson, with each having a frontispiece and 2 black and white plates by William Cooke and decorative work by F C Tilney. In the original pale green cloth bindings with gilt decoration and titles to the front board and spine. Top page edges gilted (remaining edges untrimmed). Sense and Sensibility was the first in the series and Vol I has a frontispiece picture of Jane Austen, a bibliography and a Memoir and 3 plates in the text. Vol II with frontispiece and 2 plates. Vol I 163pp; Vol II 218pp. Both volumes have bright clean bindings. Vol I has a small mark to the side of the spine below the author's name and there is small indentation to the back board close to the bottom corner. Top corners with slight inward turn. Both have light pulling to spine ends. Internally there is the bookplate of Castlecraig Library to the top of the front pastedown of each volume and the decorative ex libris section is not filled out. Free endpapers are browned as usual. The tissue guards to the frontispieces of both volumes have been removed, but contents are otherwise complete and very clean. Vol I is in near fine condition internally with the occasional spot to the side edge and a small corner crease at the top of p35. Vol II has occasional spotting at the page edge and a top corner crease at p 35. The backing is visible between pp 128 and 129 but the volume is sound. There are a couple of places - pp 186/187 and 190/191 - where the book has been poorly opened originally and a section of the side margin from one page has ended up attached to the next page. This damage affects the margins but not the text. Please enquire if you would like to see additional images.
