New York: Scribners, 1939. [First Edition]. I think you could put up a good argument that the Mystery genre fascinated August Derleth even more than the Horror genre, he wrote so many mysteries. Derleth liked continuing characters, and his Judge Peckoutside of Solar Ponswas his favorite investigator. This story features, in addition to the good Judge, Dr. Jasper Considine and his niece, Dorothy; also in minor roles in this case, Herbert Hornley and his St. Bernard, Vladimir. Lorin Fenner, a secondary continuing Derleth character. Inscribed and signed the year of publication, "For Gertrude E. Larson, with all good wishes, Cordially, August Derleth. 3/16/39. " There is also an original photograph of an older, Derleth, standing in front of his bookshelf, tipped in. A tidy, previous owner bookplate, A fine, bright red copy, one corner bump, with some dusting to top page edges. A few chips to d.j., edges. A fresh, attractive copy in d.j.
