Hiram Mattison (1811-1868) was a prominent Methodist minister in New York, who, in addion to his opposition to fraudulent psychics, was an active proponent of temperance and abolition of slavery. In this book he debunks his era's fad of "spirit-rapping" and other practices by which mediums or spiritualists claim to communicate with the dead. As Mattison states in the preface, spirit-rapping "is the grand climax of soothsaying, astrology, witchcraft, phrenology, mesmerism, clairvoyance, Psychology, Fourierism, Millerism, Mormonism, and all other superstitions, delusions, and isms that have ever been, or probably ever will be." With a dramatic woodcut frontispiece depicting the Anti-Christ as a seven headed dragon. Re-bound in quarter calf with marbled boards preserving the original calf spine. Title page shows age-toning, soiling and staining; a small darker spot of staining is present near the upper corner. The inside margin of the frontispiece is carefully restored with some spots of loss to the inner black border-line of the illustration. End papers are stained; notations in an early hand are scrawled on the front free end paper. Interior pages contain light age toning, scattered marginal foxing, soiling and wear. A long strip is excised / torn-out of the outer margin on p. 221, running right up to the edge of the text, and obscuring a few letters; a piece is also torn from the bottom corner of p. 227 obstructing the last words in a couple of text lines.
