Archivally framed in wheat linen with gold leaf bevel and 2" gold leaf & burl Neoclassical frame by Lowry-James Rare Prints & Books. The Viviparous Quadrupeds of North America (Philadelphia c.1845-48) represents the culmination of a lifelong dream held by America's most prominent naturalist and visionary, John James Audubon (1785-1851). Following the completion of his magnum opus, the Double Elephant Folio Edition of Birds of America, c. 1824-38, Audubon was at liberty to pursue a project close to his heart, large scale portraits of all of North America's native animals. SERMILIK FJORD [Original Color Lithograph]
by Kent, Rockwell
- Used
[ New York: George Miller, 1931. Landscape format, image size 33.5 x 47 cm, plus margins. Professionally matted and framed for the former owner under UV Plexi. Not examined out of frame, but visibly about fine, with a very minimum amount of the typical fading to the fugitive blue. A beautiful example of one of Kent's best lithographs, and one of his uncommon undertakings with color. In addition to the primary lithograph in black and white, a blue tint was printed from a lithograph stone, and a reddish-brown color was added via a zinc plate. An edition of 150 copies was prepared, each signed by Kent in the margin, and the stones and plate were effaced. The image depicts an encampment along the Fjord, and it is one of the most significant separate prints based on Kent's periods of residence in Greenland between 1929 and 1935. BURNE JONES 65. ZIGROSSER 52.

Paris: Imp. Lemercier [for:] Librairie Nouvelle, [nd. but ca. 1850s].. 19 plates and 18 plates. Loose sheets. Images, including captions, ca. 27 x 18.5 cm. Margins vary. Some creasing to the larger margins, two plates exhibit foxing and a couple more show some slight marginal tanning, otherwise very good or better. Decent representation of two of the sub- elements of Gavarni's extended work, which when completed, included 329 lithographic plates. The first element lacks plate 1 of the twenty published, and the second lacks plates 4 and 5 of twenty published (duplicates of 2 and 7 are also present, but not included in the count above). Ray treats the series at some length, describing Thomas Virelogue as "one of Gavarni's most brilliant inspirations," and the work as a whole as "a neglected masterpiece of nineteenth-century French graphic art."
